Explanation regarding licensure:
Prior to receiving licensure in the field of Clinical Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy, professionals are required to work under the supervision of an approved supervisor for a period of 2 - 3 years, depending on the individual's degree. Having received the training and education necessary to work with clients therapeutically, unlicensed counselors are monitored to ensure ethical decisions are being made in regards to intervention methods. These counselors also have the opportunity to speak with their supervisor about clinical challenges they are experiencing. As you are seeking support, feel free to request further information from a counselor who you are aware is under supervision and/or working toward licensure. Once licensed, a therapist must abide by State Law regarding ethical behavior and ongoing training. Oversight is provided by the Department of Licensing.
